The workshop will review faceted hierarchical classification, then demonstrate how the additions of synonyms, shared attributes and related topics can create a “hybrid classification system” to power improved information retrieval and delivery. The topics covered will include:

Reviewing the distinct advantages of faceted taxonomies

Supplementing a taxonomy with synonyms, shared attributes and related topics, using the structures of a thesaurus and an ontology

Understanding how combining these components of a controlled vocabulary can improve precision and recall when retrieving information

Linking synonym rings to create “semantic nets” to discover information

Using subject experts, automated content clustering and social networks to define related topics and contextual keywords

Identifying shared attributes to establish and structure relationships

Managing and displaying the hybrid classification data base

Improving information search, navigation and delivery with hybrid classification
